Gainsborough Trinity FC were formed in
1873, but it was not until 16 years later, in 1889, that
the club started playing competitive fixtures, when the
Midlands Counties League was formed.
After
four seasons, boasting one championship and two runners-up
spots, Gainsborough were elected out of the Midlands Counties
and into the Football League Second Division, where, in
their first game they met Manchester United (then called
Newton Heath). However, after several years of struggle,
Trinity finally resigned from the Football League and
went back into the Midlands Counties League in 1912, and
there they stayed until 1963 when they became founder
members of the Northern Premier League.
Although
the club's best league placing since then has been fourth
on two occasions, they can boast a more impressive cup
history, such as the NPL League Cup in 1982 and the League
Challenge Shield in the same season. They have also won
the Lincolnshire Senior Cup no less than 17 times. Their
last honour came in 1998 with a victory in the Unibond
Challenge Cup.
The
club also have an impressive FA Cup record, having reached
the Second Round Proper eight times in twelve years between
1927 and 1939. |
