Reserves
suffer first defeat
Morecambe Reserves followed up their excellent victory against
Chorley with another good result against early pace-setters
Southport at Christie Park. The
first shot at goal came through Nick Makin when he sent
a shot towards goal which was deflected wide of the far
post off a Southport defender after five minutes.
After
11 minutes Southport registered their first shot at goal
through Michael Powell who got a touch on a loose ball
his tame effort never caused any problems for the Morecambe
goalkeeper.
Moments
later and Morecambe almost took the lead when the Southport
defence switched off allowing Paul Lloyd to capitalise
and he sent the ball just wide of Aaron Cameron’s
right hand post.
Another
mixup in the Southport defence almost lead to a goal for
the Shrimps after 16 minutes. Aaron Cameron appeared to
have the ball under control but the Southport goalkeeper
spilled to the feet of Gareth Arnison but Cameron recovered
well and he managed to block Arnison’s shot at the
expense of a throw in.
Morecambe
finally made Aaron Cameron pay for one of his mistakes
on 19 minutes when Nick Makin jinxed past the Southport
defence and sent a shot straight at Cameron which the
Southport goalkeeper parried into the path of Gareth Arnison
who sent a shot into the roof of the net from close range.
Southport
almost put the ball in their own net on 25 minutes when
Paul Lloyd cut into the penalty area from the right and
sent a slow cross into the area where a ‘Port defender
cut out the cross, wrong footing Aaron Cameron, and sending
the ball just wide of the near post.
A
foul on the edge of the area on Scott Ford presented Morecambe
with a good chance on the half hour mark. Nick Makin stepped
up to take the resulting free kick and his shot was sent
towards the far post but Aaron Cameron was able to palm
his shot away from the penalty area.
Two
minutes later and Michael Powell wasted a glorious opportunity
from close range when he volleyed a shot over the crossbar
from inside the six yard box.
With
5 minutes left in the half Morecambe almost scored an
own goal themselves when a cross from the left was cut
out by Jamie Davies but the ball deflected towards goal
leaving Davies having to stretch to clear the ball off
the line.
The
first attempt in the second half was a fantastic effort
from Paul Lloyd. Lloyd picked up the ball in the middle
of the park before embarking on a superb run through the
heart of the Southport defence and sent a fierce shot
crashing against the crossbar before it flew away from
the danger zone.
At
the other end a corner kick from the right was met by
the head of Adam Roscoe and the Southport striker’s
header went just wide of the far post with Ryan Robinson
stranded on his line in the Morecambe goal.
On
the hour mark Danny Mahoney, playing in the centre of
midfield, unleashed a shot heading towards the top right
hand corner before Aaron Cameron pushed the ball wide.

Emphatic
victory sees reserves go top
This Wednesday evening Southport recorded an impressive
4-0 victory at Abbey Hey FC versus Altrincham in the Lancashire
Football League.
Indeed the score could have been far more had the post (three
times) and bar (twice) not denied Southport’s eager
strikers.
Southport took the lead on forty minutes. The keeper could
only block a Danny O’Brien twenty-five yard powerful
free kick, and an ever-lively Lee Mulvaney calmly slotted
the rebound home.
Despite a slow start to the second period, Southport were
to further extend their lead on 62 minutes. Mulvaney put
in a cross from the right, and Thomas Rafferty made no mistake
from five yards. Southport again went on to dominate the
half, with Steve Daly making it three nil ten minutes later.
Alex Mortimer intercepted the Alty attack and punted the
ball forward to Daly, who side stepped a defender before
shooting to the keeper’s left.
With six minutes remaining, Mulvaney was pulled in the box,
and from the resulting penalty Daly made it four-nil. This
was an excellent all round performance with first team squad
members blending well with Southport’s younger players.
All on the pitch put in a professional, committed performance
to give new manager Joey Dunn a debut win. |

Reserves 2 - 1 Northwich Victoria Reserves |
| Lancashire
League, Division 1; Friday 3rd September 2004 |
Unbeaten
start continues
On Friday evening 3rd September the Reserves entertained
Northwich Victoria at Haig Avenue under the watchful eye
of new manager Joey Dunn. Tony Rodwell has now stepped down
from managing the Reserves following his appointment in
a more senior role with the Press Association. Tony will
continue to coach the PASE and is thanked for an excellent
year in charge, a period during which he stabilised the
Reserves and took them to a very creditable 7th place in
the Lancashire League despite putting out teams that often
aged only 17 years.
Joey Dunn comes with much experience. He is a former experienced
non-league player and has also managed Altrincham and Runcorn
Reserves.
Southport trailed in the match against Northwich, but two
goals within a minute by Michael Powell and Phil Stancombe
in the eightieth minute saw Southport go on to dominate
the closing stages and bag a worthy three points. |

Motors Reserves 1 - 3 Southport Reserves |
| Lancashire
League, Division 1; Saturday 14th August 2004 |
Comfortable
win against the Motormen
Southport’s youngsters opened their Lancashire League
campaign with a difficult away trip against Vauxhall Motors
on Saturday 14th August.
Vauxhall are now managed by Aubrey Rogers, who many will
remember assisted Paul Moore with our Reserves at the start
of last season. Indeed Vauxhall resembled an early Southport
Reserve team from last year’s campaign, containing
no fewer than seven players who had featured in Southport’s
Lancashire League squad including Andy Iro, Teddy Wheelan,
Paul Addo, Anthony Lipson and Kyle Sampson.
However, they were to prove no match for the Sandgrounder’s
fitter, more skilful youngsters and Southport were to run
out worthy 3-1 victors.
Southport absorbed much early pressure before breaking the
deadlock on fifteen minutes. A blistering Danny O’Brien
free kick neatly cleared the Vauxhall wall to find the top
right hand corner of the net.
Within fifteen seconds of the restart Tony Evans cleverly
ran round Andy Iro before shooting from an acute angle.
His perfect shot could only be helped over the line by a
Vauxhall defender.
Vauxhall stepped up the tempo for the remainder of the first
half, but despite clawing a goal back on 25 minutes, were
unable to further break the ‘Port defence before the
break.
The second period found Southport looking the far fitter
team and as the game progressed they began to put together
wave after wave of attack. Danny O’Brien found the
net again on 61 minutes, his shot from almost on the goal
line sneaking in to the bottom left corner.
Southport appeared to be denied a clear penalty in the closing
minutes, and indeed as the tired Vauxhall legs ran out,
could count themselves very unlucky not to further extend
their lead.
This was a good all round performance against a strong,
big side – the performance promised much for the remainder
of the season. |
