SOUTHPORT manager Liam Watson confidently proclaimed
after seeing Nationwide North his side end Nuneaton Borough's
six-match unbeaten record: "We have no-one to fear
in this league."
He
added: "Each of my players won their personal battles
and we dominated against an in-form side. In particular,
our strike partner-ship of Neil Robinson and Terry Fearns
was outstanding.
"The
scoreline did not reflect our overall performance. We
had chances in both halves to add to our tally."
Fearns
continued his goalscoring run, netting the 48th-minute
winner.
The
Sandgrounders had taken the game to the Boro throughout
the first half.
The
home side's only real threat came from early raids on
the left from ex-Port Merseyside-based winger Stuart Whittaker.
It
was Neil Robinson's determination chasing down the right
that undid Nuneaton.
Robinson
put in a low centre that the incoming Kevin Lynch back-heeled
to Fearns, who fired a low shot 15 yards out from the
left across Darren Acton.
Just
on the hour mark, Fearns could have killed the home side
off but was foiled by Darren Acton in a one-on-one situation
created by Kevin Leadbetter.
The
Sandgrounders had to withstand late pressure from Roger
Ashby's side in order to extend their own unbeaten away
run.
This
included a 90th-minute offthe-ball incident while awaiting
a Nuneaton free-kick.
Boro
defender Steve Farmer collapsed in the Port box and required
lengthy treatment. Neither referee Steins or his assistant
spotted any offence creating an explosive finale.
